Purchasing a Computer - Faculty and Staff

Please contact the CSM Computing Support team at csm-servicedesk@calpoly.edu to discuss purchasing technology for teaching and research.

Purchasing a Computer - Students

If you are experiencing financial hardship and are unable to afford the technology you need to be academically successful, you can apply to Cal Poly Cares for assistance. Cal Poly Cares is available to any Cal Poly student including those whom are not federal Title IV eligible such as international and undocumented students.

The College of Science and Math does not have strict requirements around student computers, however a well functioning computer is an important tool for academic success.  These are the specs for a computer that should last your 4 years at Cal Poly:

  Model processor memory storage
Mac Laptop 13" MacBook Pro or 16" MacBook Pro  2.0GHz Quad-Core 16GB 512GB SSD
Mac desktop 21" iMac or 27" iMac 3.0GHz 6-core 16GB 512GB SSD
PC laptop No specific recommendation Intel i5 8th Gen Quad-core or equivalent 16GB 512GB SSD
PC desktop No specific recommendation Intel i5 8th Gen 6-Core or equivalent 16GB 512GB SSD

The Cal Poly Bookstore can assist you with the purchase of a computer.

We understand that not all computing needs will be covered by these specs.  Please email your questions and requests to csm-servicedesk@calpoly.edu.
