The Building

Research and Teaching Complex

Student and teacher look over a sheet of paperGrounded in Cal Poly's values and its Learn by Doing mission, a new undergraduate research building at the heart of campus will transform student learning and spur imagination and innovation. This facility will exemplify the university's practice of putting undergraduate students at the heart of real-world research.

The College of Science and Mathematics will  collaborate with the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences on this cutting-edge, interdisciplinary project. The science and mathematics section of the new building will include

  • State-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to undergraduate research
  • Student collaboration spaces
  • Conference rooms, seminar facilities and offices where students and faculty can connect and share ideas

With this new building and our excellent faculty, staff and students, Cal Poly can become a national model for faculty-mentored undergraduate research.

Help Shape the Future

Cal Poly's learn by doing mission

Why Student Research Matters

Parker Sommerville

Parker Somerville, Chemistry Major

Research has instilled in me a passion for organic chemistry and the ability to solve problems as they arise. The experience I am gaining now is preparing me for graduate studies better than any single class I could have taken.

Karoline Eckhart

Karoline Eckhart, Chemistry Major

Doing research has enabled me to embody Cal Poly's Learn by Doing motto. It’s given me a creative outlet where I can approach a problem and figure out an innovative way to solve it. The lab experience I've gained doing research at Cal Poly will put me ahead of the game when I enter graduate school or the workforce.

Jimmy Wong

Jimmy Wong, B.S., Statistics, 2015

I think my experiences at Cal Poly are really relatable to the real world. In the future, if I get data that requires a method that I'm not familiar with, I have that experience of learning and doing research independently.

Ana Maria Nunez Castrejon

Ana Maria Nunez Castrejon, Biological Sciences Major

Presenting my research at a conference opened up a lot of opportunities and gave me a lot more confidence. As a first generation student, I didn't know too much about college, and now I’m thinking about the possibility of grad school.
