Our Sense of Place and Purpose

Hands-on educational experiences are foundational to Bailey College students’ personal and professional growth, self-discovery and success. I know firsthand that in the process of the Learn by Doing experience, the Bailey College community also is contributing to the greater good.

What does this mean? Perhaps this impact is demonstrated best in this fall 2024 issue of Intersections that highlights the college’s dedication to “Place and Purpose.” You will read about Bailey College collaborations that showcase a wide variety of important studies, research projects, initiatives and accomplishments reflecting a stewardship of place and commitment to making a difference — improving the wellbeing of our environs and communities.

Our cover story, produced in English and available in Spanish in our online version, features mathematics Professor Dylan Retsek, born with a partial limb, who recently began competitive rock climbing as part of USA Climbing’s Paraclimbing National Team. Retsek, a Cal Poly Distinguished Teaching Award recipient, inspires students to take on difficult challenges while finding beauty in the process.

Additionally, you’ll learn about the work of statistics students helping to assess homeless meal service through data visualization tools, new initiatives to support students who are parents and the celebration of 25 years of a program helping disabled community members through adapted kayaking and much more.

The level of commitment by our faculty, staff and students is rewarding and powerful. In observing their work, I see that students are applying sophisticated technology and approaches to solving problems, and that their collaborations with faculty and staff are making an impact in influential and inspiring ways.

And our graduates go on to do amazing work. In alumni news, Sherri Brown, our Bailey College honored alumna (Mathematics, ’87), shares her insights as a champion of student success who has served in executive roles at The Walt Disney Company. Sherri has been exceptionally generous, offering her support and mentorship to Bailey College students.

The level of diligence and commitment to Cal Poly’s Teacher-Scholar Model is felt strongly within the Bailey College community. Working together, we use our knowledge and creativity to find innovative solutions that lead to change for the better. I am so proud to see the positive impact Bailey College students make every day.
