MICRO VIEW of the graduation cap made by April Valdez-Garcia and worn at Cal Poly Commencement in June 2024. As a first-generation liberal studies transfer student, Valdez-Garcia will earn her credential from the Multiple Subject Teacher Education Preparation (MSTEP) Program and master’s degree in Cal Poly's School of Education as a Teaching for Inclusivity and Equity Residency (TIER) resident. She decorated her cap with a message in Spanish, “Gracias a mi familia por todo su apoyo,” which translates in English to, “Thanks to my family for all their support.” Photo by Dylan Head
MACRO VIEW of Valdez-Garcia (left) celebrating at commencement with her daughter, Alaiya. Valdez-Garcia benefited from support not only from her family but also from Cal Poly Students with Dependents, a program providing resources and advocacy to Cal Poly undergraduate and graduate students who are pregnant, parents, guardians and caregivers. Participating students benefit from the program's commitment to promoting their success and the Cal Poly community benefits from the wealth of diversity brought to campus.
