The William and Linda Frost Center for Research and Innovation
The William and Linda Frost Center for Research and Innovation opened in May 2023 and houses 102,000-square-feet of state-of-the-art interdisciplinary laboratory and teaching spaces that enhances research and learning experiences for students and faculty in multiple colleges and includes 30,000 square feet of research space for the Bailey College. In this photo, biological sciences Professor Nathaniel Martinez (left) and Claire Haats, Frost Research Fellow and biological sciences research student, work in Bailey College’s Center for Applications in Biotechnology lab inside the Frost Center. Yosemite National Park
Cal Poly researchers resurveyed historic vegetation monitoring plots in
Yosemite National Park to understand how its alpine plant communities are responding to climate change. Shown in photo are biological sciences graduate student Rachel Friesen, Frost Research Scholar Brooke Wallasch, and Frost Research Fellows Maddie Windsor and Eda McColl hiking along Kuna Crest in search of a plot. Mbangombe, Malawi
Over the last decade, more than 100 Cal Poly student researchers and international collaborators guided by physics Professor Pete Schwartz developed ISECooking (Insulated Solar Electric Cooking) as an alternative to biomass burning practices used by more than 3 billion people. Funded by UK Aid, the goal is to develop ISECooker manufacturing capacity in regions where traditional cooking emits smoke, contributes to climate change and 4 million respiratory deaths annually; and is responsible for deforestation and exposing women and children collecting firewood to violence. Schwartz spent 2023 in Africa, India and Nepal building cookers with local collaborators. Shown in photo are community members in Mbangombe, Malawi, with rural solar electrification partners.
