Cal Poly's College of Science and Mathematics is home to both the university's School of Education, which grants teaching credentials and master's degrees for teaching professionals, and the Liberal Studies Department, which offers bachelor's degrees for students seeking to be teachers.

California and the nation are experiencing a crisis level shortage of qualified secondary school science and mathematics teachers. In addition, a recognized need exists to increase science and mathematics competency and confidence in elementary school teachers. Simultaneously, California projects a shortage of college graduates needed for the workforce, particularly in STEM disciplines: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

• The College of Education has been building a STEM emphasis into its existing programs including educational leadership and has a strong teacher credentialing component.
• Cal Poly has an outstanding College of Liberal Arts to provide the arts and humanities education for future teachers.
• CESAME, the Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education, is guiding Cal Poly in state and national efforts to enhance science and mathematics teaching and learning as well as teacher education.
