Warren J. Baker Center for Science & Mathematics Dedicated Nov. 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The campus community, donors, alumni and friends of Cal Poly gathered to dedicate the new Warren J. Baker Center for Science & Mathematics Nov. 1.

President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and Phil Bailey, dean of the College of Science & Mathematics, recognized the contributions of donors, architects, builders and artists as well as Cal Poly faculty, staff and students.
At the dedication, President Emeritus Warren J. Baker was honored by student representatives from the CSU Board of Trustees, Congresswoman Lois Capps and Assembly Member Katcho Achadjian. Baker also received the President's Medal of Excellence, bestowed by Armstrong, for "transformational service to Cal Poly and the State of California" at a dinner later that evening.
"Dr. Baker saw from the beginning that Cal Poly's Learn by Doing philosophy had the potential to transform this university into a premier comprehensive polytechnic university," Armstrong said at the dedication.
Carly Fitzsimons Baker and Phil and Tina Bailey were also acknowledged for their contributions to the university and the Baker Center.
The Baker Center’s location at the heart of campus symbolizes the central role of science and mathematics in the polytechnic curriculum. Every student will take a class in the 189,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, where ample study spaces facilitate teamwork and studio classrooms integrate lecture and lab, encouraging students to actively discover science. Beyond the strictly academic, the Baker Center is designed to be a working model of sustainability and building performance for tomorrow’s scientists and engineers.
"This building was designed first and foremost with the needs of our students in mind, and it was designed with particular attention to serve our core educational philosophy — Learn by Doing," Armstrong said in his remarks.
