Three Education Graduates Hail from Same Family
A family of Cal Poly graduates put a dent in the nation’s STEM teacher shortage this spring. Mom Nancy Maytubby and her daughters Malinda Klinchuch and Hailey Maytubby all received education degrees or a credential in June.
Cal Poly Students and Dean Bailey Honored at State Capitol
Twenty Cal Poly students who received state and national awards and other honors were recognized for their accomplishments by state lawmakers at the Capitol in Sacramento on March 9.
College Honors Outstanding Seniors
Faculty, staff, students and their families gathered with Dean Phil Bailey at the college's annual awards banquet to honor this year's outstanding graduating seniors. The top seniors in each department were recognized along with students who received collegewide awards.

More than 600 students graduated from the College of Science & Mathematics in June. Even after 46 Commencements, I still think it's a great day. I know all those young men and women are going to make a difference in science, medicine, teaching or industry, and I'm proud of them and of what we do here at Cal Poly.

Cal Poly Students Take Top Honors at CSU Research Competition
Five Cal Poly students took top honors at the 2015 California State University (CSU) Research Competition held May 1-2 at CSU San Bernardino. Shaker Von Price Funkhouser, an undergraduate physics student from La Quinta, Calif., won a first-place award for his work in proving an energy principle for charged black holes.

Cal Poly Biological Sciences Student Awarded NSF Research Fellowship
Cal Poly biological sciences graduate student Paul Carvalho was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) graduate research fellowship. The grant will fund three years of his master's and doctoral programs, allowing him to continue researching fisheries, work that he started as an undergraduate at Cal Poly.
Professors Receive Distinguished Scholarship and Teaching Awards
Cal Poly honored three professors from the College of Science & Mathematics for their work during the 2014-15 academic year: Lars Tomanek in the Biological Sciences Department and Philip Costanzo in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department received the Distinguished Scholarship Award. Todd Grundmeier received the Distinguished Teaching Award.
Cal Poly Student Named to SAS Student Ambassador Program at Software Maker's Global Convention in Dallas
A fourth-year Cal Poly statistics student was named an SAS Student Ambassador — one of seven in the nation and only two in California — for innovative use of analytics in research. Isabel Litton presented her research at the SAS Global Forum, a gathering of more than 5,000 business and information technology SAS software users, in Dallas.

Almost 1,300 science enthusiasts of all ages came out to the Cal Poly Pier to learn about sea creatures, SCUBA and local marine research. Judging by the smiles, a good time was had by all.

More than 200 students presented their research findings at the 15th annual college Student Research Conference in May. The conference offers students an opportunity to hone the presentation and communication skills they will need as professional scientists.
