Cal Poly Students Take Top Honors at CSU Research Competition

Department hair Joseph BorzellinoFive Cal Poly students took top honors at the 2015 California State University (CSU) Research Competition held May 1-2 at CSU San Bernardino. Shaker Von Price Funkhouser, an undergraduate physics student from La Quinta, Calif., won a first-place award for his work in proving an energy principle for charged black holes.

Cal Poly Biological Sciences Student Awarded NSF Research Fellowship

Student solving math problem at workshopCal Poly biological sciences graduate student Paul Carvalho was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) graduate research fellowship. The grant will fund three years of his master's and doctoral programs, allowing him to continue researching fisheries, work that he started as an undergraduate at Cal Poly.

Professors Receive Distinguished Scholarship and Teaching Awards

Philip CostanzoCal Poly honored three professors from the College of Science & Mathematics for their work during the 2014-15 academic year: Lars Tomanek in the Biological Sciences Department and Philip Costanzo in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department received the Distinguished Scholarship Award. Todd Grundmeier received the Distinguished Teaching Award.

Cal Poly Student Named to SAS Student Ambassador Program at Software Maker's Global Convention in Dallas

A fourth-year Cal Poly statistics student was named an SAS Student Ambassador — one of seven in the nation and only two in California — for innovative use of analytics in research. Isabel Litton presented her research at the SAS Global Forum, a gathering of more than 5,000 business and information technology SAS software users, in Dallas.
